Bull Mountains Wildlife Management Area Adventures

The Bull Mountains Wildlife Management Area (WMA) covers a diverse landscape of rolling grasslands, grassy foothills, and rugged ridges along the western edge of the Bull Mountains in south-central Montana. Spanning over 40,000 acres, this WMA is primarily managed for upland game birds such as pheasants, sharp-tailed grouse, and Hungarian partridge, as well as for big game species like mule deer and pronghorn antelope. The area features open, semi-arid habitat with scattered juniper groves and sagebrush flats, set against a backdrop of sandstone outcrops and hills rising to nearly 5,000 feet in elevation. Historically, the region was utilized by Native American tribes and later ranchers, forming part of Montana’s extensive grazing lands. The Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks acquired the land to promote game species conservation and provide public access for hunting and wildlife observation.

Recreation opportunities abound, with upland bird hunting being the primary activity during fall and winter months. The WMA also supports hiking and horseback riding on informal trails and dirt roads, offering expansive views of the surrounding prairie and mountains. Wildlife photography and bird watching are popular in spring and summer when the area blooms with wildflowers and abundant birdlife. There are no developed campgrounds within the WMA, so visitors typically use primitive or dispersed camping nearby.
